Artist and Signature: Manner and style of Sir Matthew Smith (1879-1959) Inscribed verso in oil 'From M.S. to Elizabeth 1934'. There is a later handwritten note reading “To E.C.F.C. 1934,” possibly offering a clue to the identity of Elizabeth mentioned in the painted dedication. A further pencil-written attribution appears on the stretcher, reading “Mathew Smith 1934.” The misspelling of “Mathew” (with a single ‘t’) supports the idea that this was an early attempt to identify the artist by someone familiar with Smith’s circle or style, but not by the artist himself. The stretcher also bears a reference number “K272,” likely a dealer or framer annotation added after the painting’s creation, perhaps when cataloguing or exhibiting the work mid-century. Such markings were common practice in galleries and restoration studios between the 1940s and 1960s, often used for stock control or attribution purposes.
