FAQs

A jardiniere is an ornamental pot or stand for plants, originating in France from the French word jardiniere meaning female gardener. During the Victorian and Edwardian eras, indoor plant display became highly fashionable, leading to the widespread production of decorative metal vessels for ferns and potted palms.

Traditional jardinieres from the late 19th and early 20th centuries were commonly manufactured from sheet brass, copper, or cast iron. Techniques often included spinning metal on a lathe, hand-beating, soldered seams, and the attachment of cast brass or bronze handles and feet.

Authentic period pieces typically exhibit age-related patina, such as natural tarnish, minor surface scuffs, and historical oxidation. Construction details like hand-cut rivets, brazed joints, and traditional casting flaws rather than uniform modern machine stamping also indicate authenticity.

A metallic vessel introduces warmth and texture to contemporary spaces. It can be utilised to house trailing houseplants, function as a standalone decorative object on a sideboard, or hold dried botanicals.

To preserve the original patina, avoid harsh abrasive cleaners or excessive polishing that strips historical character. Dust gently with a soft dry cloth, and use a plastic liner inside the pot if holding live plants to prevent moisture damage to the metal.
