Carolean furniture refers to the design style prevalent during the reign of King Charles II in the late 17th century, characterised by rich baroque influences, elaborate wood carving, and high-status materials like walnut.

Cabinetmakers during the Carolean period predominantly utilised native timbers such as oak and walnut, frequently incorporating veneers, intricate surface carving, and occasionally japanning or lacquer work inspired by Asian imports.

Authentication involves examining construction techniques, tool marks, timber oxidation, and joinery methods, as 19th-century revival pieces often display machine-sawn elements and different secondary woods compared to 17th-century originals.

Pairing heavy historic timber furniture with contemporary minimalist surroundings or neutral walls creates a striking visual contrast that highlights the craftsmanship without overwhelming the space.

Maintain antique wooden surfaces by keeping them away from direct sunlight and heat sources, applying microcrystalline wax sparingly, and dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth.
