Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chinese export gouache paintings were created by Canton artists primarily during the 18th and 19th centuries for Western merchants and travellers. These works depicted daily Chinese life, local trades, costumes, flora, and shipping scenes to satisfy European fascination with the Far East.

These paintings were typically executed using opaque gouache pigments on pith paper, derived from the spongy cellular tissue of the Tetrapanax papyrifer plant, or on fine rice paper and silk.

Authentic pith paper paintings exhibit a velvety, textured surface with micro-cellular structure under magnification. Due to the delicate nature of the dried pith material, small splits or hairline cracks near the edges are common indicators of age.

Hang framed sets symmetrically in modern mats and simple dark frames above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or along a hallway to create a clean, curated focal point that bridges traditional history with modern framing.

Store or display pith paper artwork away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and fluctuating temperatures. UV-protective glass and conservation-grade mounting materials are recommended to prevent pigment fading and paper embrittlement.
