Description

A late Victorian monochrome etching entitled “Carting Seaweed off the Coast of Guernsey” after a painting by English watercolourist Edward Duncan (1803-1882) and engraved by Scottish printmaker Charles Oliver Murray (1842-1923). The image captures a complex scene of gathering and loading seaweed onto carts drawn by oxen and horses on a rocky coastline. The busy scene is full of men, women and children engaged on the task, with the animals including a dog and various tools, against a distant choppy sea. Edward Duncan was a renowned watercolourist, member of the Royal Society of Watercolourists and patronised by Queen Victoria. The engraving has been recently reframed. There is a little foxing in the title margin, which does not detract, and no damage. The engraving is an interesting historical image of life in the late 19thC.

During the nineteenth century, printmaking flourished as artists sought to capture rural, agricultural, and coastal labor in detailed graphic detail. Etchings from this era frequently documented regional traditions, such as gathering seaweed for fertilizer in the Channel Islands.

Etchings were produced by incising designs into a copper or zinc plate coated with an acid-resistant ground, then submerging the plate in acid. The resulting lines were inked and transferred onto heavy cotton or linen rag paper using a high-pressure rolling press.
