A De Grave, London – William IV Imperial Bushel Bronze Measure, Dated 1834 (Cornwall)

Dimensions: Approx. 49.5 cm x 22.5 cm

A particularly fine example of a cast bronze Imperial Bushel Measure, finely engraved “CORPORATION OF PENRYN CORNWALL” to the centre, “IMPERIAL BUSHEL” to the band, together with the maker’s mark “DE GRAVE, LONDON”. Dated 1834.

The piece features robust cast bronze handles to either side, with a rich patina and excellent detail.

Such measures were historically used for dry goods such as grain, ensuring traders sold fair quantities. This example was owned by the Corporation of Penryn, Cornwall, whose officers enforced market standards by conducting random inspections. Short-measuring customers could result in severe penalties—including arrest, imprisonment, or even transportation to Australia for repeat offenders.

This is a very fine and rare example, carefully polished and presented in immaculate condition—ready for display.
