The Animalier movement emerged in 19th-century France, focusing on the realistic and dynamic depiction of animals in sculpture, championed by artists who studied anatomy closely at menageries.

Most period bronzes were produced using the traditional lost-wax method or sand casting, followed by hand-chasing of the surface detail and the application of chemical patinas.

Authentic pieces typically feature crisp anatomical detailing, a stable and deep-toned chemical patina, foundry marks, and evidence of hand-chasing rather than modern smooth machine-finishing.

Such sculptural pieces work well placed on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or heavy desk, adding a touch of classical texture and historical depth to modern or traditional schemes.

Bronze should be dusted gently with a soft, dry cloth. Chemical cleaners and abrasive polishes must be avoided to protect the original historical patina.
