Description

An impressive and very well made antique mahogany serpentine chest on chest of drawers. This is in the antique Georgian style, and it dates from around the 1930’s.

It is of great quality, with beautiful flame mahogany veneers and cross banded drawer fronts. It is a great size with lots of storage space, there is also a useful pull out slide that comes out of the middle. This stands on bracket feet and has a lovely overhanging cornice.

We have had this recently re-polished, it is in excellent condition for its age, with just some minor historical wear remaining here and there. This also comes apart into two pieces for ease of transport.

The chest on chest, often called a tallboy, originated in the late 17th century during the Baroque period and became exceptionally popular throughout the Georgian era for providing maximum vertical storage with a compact footprint.

Authentic period pieces are typically constructed from solid timber and high-grade veneers such as mahogany or walnut, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer boxes and traditional brass batwing or drop-handle hardware.

Authenticity is identified by examining the secondary woods used in drawer linings, hand-cut dovetailing, signs of age-related oxidisation, timber shrinkage, and traditional pegged or jointed frame construction.

A traditional tallboy adds architectural weight and rich timber tones to contemporary spaces, serving as a functional statement piece in a bedroom or dressing room while contrasting against neutral walls.

Preserve the finish by keeping the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources, applying periodic applications of traditional beeswax, and avoiding silicone-based commercial polishes.
