It’s a juxtaposition of divine innocence and the brutality of mankind. This theme is often depicted in Christian iconography and reminds the viewer of Christ’s sacrifice to deliver us from the consequences of sin.
The paint surface has suffered some distress over the centuries, probably from the time it spent in a church or private chapel, but it’s entirely stable and conserved. It’s an enchanting decorative piece.
Held in a later wooden frame.
