FAQs

An antique flesh fork is a long-handled cooking implement traditionally used in open-hearth kitchens during the 17th and 18th centuries to lift, turn, or test large cuts of meat cooking over an open fire.

These utensils typically featured hand-forged wrought iron or steel tines and shafts combined with turned wooden handles made from domestic hardwoods such as fruitwood, boxwood, or ash, secured with brass or iron ferrules.

Authentication relies on identifying hand-forged tool marks on the steel, the natural patination and wear on the turned wooden handle, hand-cut joinery, and the presence of historical oxidisation consistent with open-hearth use.

Historic metalware and kitchenalia can be displayed mounted on a rustic wooden board, placed in a heavy stoneware crock on a kitchen counter, or styled within an open shelving unit to add historical texture to a room.

Preservation involves keeping the object in a stable environment away from excess humidity, applying microcrystalline wax or a light coat of mineral oil to the metal to prevent rust, and treating the aged wood with a neutral conditioner.
