Here is a painting that is refreshing to look at, and not only during a heatwave! Dating from the 1930s, it is a beautiful example of the colourist art of Marthe Dorlet, a woman artist who worked alongside Suzanne Valadon.

Marthe's painting shares the boldness, vibrancy, and strong contrasts that caracterise Valadon's palette of colours, as prove the rich blues, dark madder and touches of yellow in this winter scene. The critic and poet Georges Turpin consider Marthe Dorlet's "harmonic discoveries very exciting", and it is easy to see why. Marthe became a member of the Salon d'Hiver in 1929 and exhibited at the Salon des Tuileries and the Salon des Indépendants . From 1934, she exhibited at the Salon d'Automne. She also worked with Suzanne Valadon from 1934 to 1937.

Marthe was a member of the Union of Women Painters and Sculptors and had acclaimed one man shows at the Carmine Gallery, the Galerie René Breteau, and the Galerie Lucie Krogh, among others.

Our oil on hardboard by Marthe Dorlet is signed at the upper right. To the verso, there are traces of exhibition labels and an inscription by the artist's hand which situates the landscape at "Bouzy-la-Forêt", a village in the forrest of Orléans.

Measuring 46 x 55 cm the overall size of the painting in an art deco style silvered wooden frame is 53 x 63 cm.
