it's a still-life painting, but it's a traditional one!

Semi-abstract and lightly cubist, with a strong focus on form, texture, and a muted colour palette, the work rewards close looking and personal interpretation.

It depicts horse chestnut leaves and blossoms in a vase ,young, tender and fragile, which have yet to fully unfurl from their buds.

It is a powerful painting that uses a distinctive modern style to explore the interplay of form, texture, and emotion.

The artist is Paulo Reutter, born 1927 in Sao Paulo and raised in Germany. Although he loved art from a young age, he complied with his father's wish to learn a trade - that of a joiner - before studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg. A painter and sculptor, Reutter developed a style of particular poignancy that characterises his paintings and sculptures. He writes that he cannot live without art, and at the age of 97, is still active in his studio.

The painting presented here dates from 1961 and is signed at the lower right. Measuring 61 x 50 cm, the overall framed size is 73 x 60 cm.
