Market Scene, Ca 1960 Haitian Master Laurent Casimir Bold and Colourful Naive Outsider Oil on Canvas

1940 - 1960
Description

If you'd always like it to be summer in your home, consider this one: a bold and colourful market scene by one of the early masters of modern Haitian Art, Laurent Casimir (1928-1990).

Casimir was one of the instigators of a Haitian painting archetype, the market scene, which he painted using various shades of red, orange, and yellow. His style was often copied, but imitations never come close to the real thing. Casimir uses deeply saturated and harmonious colours to create a composition which is balanced and witnesses an extraordinary joie de vivre.

Laurent Casimir was born at Anse -à-Veau and moved to the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince in the late 1940s. In 1947, he was introduced to the Centre d'Art the mythical art school for talented young artists by his friend, the painter Dieudonné Cédor. From 1950 to 1956, Casimir attended the Foyer des Arts Plastiques , founded by a group of intellectuals and modern artists, including Cédor.

His work belongs to the permanent collection of Haitian art of the Figge Art Museum in Davenport, IA, and the Milwaukee Art Museum in Milwaukee, WI. His name is mentioned in major Haitian art books: As writes art historian Gérard Alexis; “Laurent injects rhythm into densely populated market-places and carnivals by using the interplay of colours.”

Our oil on canvas by Casimir Laurent is a rare early work, dating from circa 1960. It is presented in its original narrow strip frame and is signed at the lower right. The painting measures 41 x 64 cm.
