This softly coloured watercolour shows a dreamy young lady seated in a garden landscape with her pet pooch. Wearing a white dress over pantaloons, she has a bright red wrap over her arm and a straw bonnet discarded by her feet. Rambling roses are climbing up a stone column behind her and in the distance there is a glimpse of her family home.
Signed S. Foncesa (concealed beneath the mount), the watercolour resides in a handsome rosewood frame with a deep gilt surround. Circa 1840
