FAQs

Victorian watercolour paintings typically feature atmospheric landscapes, genre scenes, or maritime subjects, often characterised by a meticulous application of transparent washes on heavy-weight rag paper to capture natural light and texture.

Artists during this era relied on handmade or mould-made rag paper, gum arabic binders, and finely ground natural or mineral pigments applied with soft sable or camel hair brushes.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the paper for period watermarks, inspecting the pigments for age-related oxidisation, verifying signature styles, and checking for genuine toning or foxing consistent with age.

An antique painting adds historical depth and character to modern spaces when paired with minimalist framing, neutral wall colours, and subtle accent lighting that highlights the artwork without causing glare.

Preservation requires framing with acid-free museum-grade mats, blocking direct ultraviolet sunlight, and maintaining stable indoor humidity levels to prevent paper degradation and pigment fading.
