Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Stobwasser snuff boxes are high-quality lacquered papier-mache containers produced primarily in Brunswick, Germany, and London during the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. They are world-renowned for their durable varnish finish and finely executed hand-painted miniatures on the lids.

These items were crafted by compressing layers of paper soaked in paste or varnish into moulds, which were then baked at high temperatures to create a dense, moisture-resistant material. Multiple coats of dark lacquer were applied, polished to a smooth gloss, and finished with detailed oil-painted decorations.

Authentic pieces often feature red or red-brown interior lacquering and may bear stencil marks, impressed stamps, or hand-painted numbering inside the lid or base. The exceptional clarity and artistic quality of the painted miniature portrait is also a key indicator of genuine workshop output.

They are best displayed as decorative accents on flat surfaces such as writing desks, bookshelves, or sideboards alongside leather-bound books and brass accessories. Placing them under glass cloches or in shallow display trays highlights their delicate surface details while providing protection.

Dust lightly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or pony-hair brush, avoiding wet cleaning agents or chemical solvents which can strip the protective varnish. Keep items out of direct sunlight and away from central heating sources to prevent warping, cracking, or paint degradation.
