Early 2nd Century Roman Sestertius of Emperor Trajan – Fortuna Reverse
A substantial Roman bronze sestertius struck at Rome during the reign of Emperor Trajan, dating from AD 112–114.
The obverse depicts a laureate bust of Trajan facing right, with the partially legible legend: IMP CAES NERVAE TRAIANO AVG GERM DAC PM TR P COS V PP. The reverse features Fortuna seated left, holding a rudder and cornucopia, with a modius at her feet — a symbolic representation of guidance and abundance. Although the reverse legend is worn, the type remains identifiable.
The coin retains traces of its original orichalcum patination, with stable verdigris across both surfaces. The detail is softened by wear, yet the portrait and reverse type are still discernible. No evidence of casting seams or modern interference.
Diameter: approx. 32–33 mm
Weight: 23.4 g
