The door to the safe bearing the maker''s label ''S. Mordan & Co.''

S. Mordan & Co was founded by Sampson Mordan (1770-1843), apprentice and assistant of the mechanic John Bramah, nephew of the famous locksmith Joseph Bramah. Founded together with a partner in 1815, the firm started trading under Mordan''s eponymous label in 1836, and was continued by his sons from 1843 onwards. Gaining fame with their participation in the 1851 Great Exhibition, Mordan & Co would go on to supply items in silver and gold to Asprey & Co among others, while also produ...cing their own pieces for sale.
