Kashmiri papier-mache, known locally as Kar-i-Qalamdan, is a traditional handicraft that originated in Persia and was introduced to Kashmir in the 15th century, where it evolved to feature intricate miniature painting.

Authentic pieces are crafted from macerated paper pulp or layered paper waste mixed with adhesive, moulded into shape, smoothed with plaster, and meticulously hand-painted with natural pigments before receiving a protective lacquer finish.

Authenticity is typically determined by examining the weight, the presence of traditional natural pigments, hand-painted brushwork details, and signs of ageing such as craquelure or minor oxidisation in the lacquer.

This type of artefact works well as a focal point on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or console table, adding textural contrast and cultural richness to eclectic or maximalist interiors.

To preserve the delicate painted surface, items should be kept out of direct sunlight, protected from high humidity, and cleaned only with a dry, soft cloth without the use of water or chemical solvents.
