FAQs

During the 19th century, Scottish watercolour painting flourished with artists capturing the dramatic topography and atmospheric conditions of the Highlands and lochs, often influenced by the romanticism movement.

Artists of this era typically used rag-based watercolour paper, handmade from cotton or linen fibres, along with natural mineral and organic pigments applied with sable or hog-hair brushes.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-appropriate watermarks in the paper, hand-mixed pigments showing natural granulation under magnification, and historical framing techniques or signatures consistent with the artists working period.

An antique watercolour brings historic character to a room when paired with simple, neutral framing that allows the delicate tones to stand out, complementing traditional or transitional interior schemes.

Antique watercolours should be kept away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent fading and foxing, and ideally framed with acid-free mount board and UV-filtering conservation glass.
