FAQs

Hokkaido carved bears, known locally as Kibori Kuma, originated in the early 20th century in Japans northernmost prefecture, heavily influenced by Swiss wood carving traditions introduced to local farmers during winter months.

These sculptures are typically hand-carved from native woods such as linden or pine, utilising chisels and knives to create textured, layered fur effects, and often feature inset glass eyes or realistic painted details.

Authentic pieces often exhibit deep, hand-chased chisel marks rather than smooth machine sanding, distinctive regional styles, and sometimes artist signatures or village stamps on the base.

These pieces act as striking focal points on large bookshelves, sideboards, or mantels, bringing natural texture and historical character to rustic, maximalist, or eclectic interior schemes.

Maintain the wood by keeping the sculpture away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations, dusting gently with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the surface.
