Claude Michel, known as Clodion, was an 18th-century French sculptor famed for his Rococo terracotta and bronze groups depicting mythological subjects. During the late 19th century, French foundries produced bronze editions after his original models to satisfy demand for classical and Rococo Revival interior decoration.

Nineteenth-century French bronzes were cast using the lost-wax (cire perdue) or sand-casting method, followed by hand-chasing to refine anatomical features and drapery. The completed pieces received chemical patinas to produce dark brown or black finishes and were commonly mounted on marble or bronze bases.
