Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

English School portraiture of the 18th century often featured sitters within pastoral or landscape settings, capturing soft natural light and relaxed poses. During the Georgian era, children were frequently depicted alongside domestic pets or natural elements, symbolising youth and innocence.

These portraits were typically rendered in oil paints on hand-stretched canvas. Frames were generally crafted from carved wood or composite molding, coated with gesso, and finished with hand-applied gold leaf to create ornate giltwood enclosures.

Authentic works from this era usually exhibit age-appropriate craquelure across the paint layer, natural oxidisation on the reverse of the canvas, and hand-forged tacks on original stretchers. Giltwood frames often show natural wear revealing the bole layer beneath the gold leaf.

A pair of oval portraits can be hung symmetrically above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table to establish visual balance. They create a strong focal point when set against contemporary muted wall tones or rich traditional paint colours.

Canvas paintings should be kept away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and heat sources to prevent paint cracking or structural warping. Dusting should be performed lightly with a soft, dry camel-hair brush rather than liquid cleaners.
