A Toby jug is a pottery jug shaped like the full figure of a seated person, usually a hearty, stout man wearing 18th-century attire and a tricorn hat. Originating in 18th-century England, these vessels were traditionally used for serving ale or porter and became a staple of British folk art and pub culture.

Traditional Toby jugs were typically crafted from earthenware or Staffordshire pottery, glazed with hand-painted polychrome enamel colours. Potters used moulded slip-casting or press-moulding techniques before firing the pieces in a kiln and applying the distinct colourful lead-glazed finishes.

Authentic pieces can be identified by examining the glaze characteristics, crazing, weight, and any makers marks or registration numbers on the base. Older examples often feature hand-painted underglaze details, softer earthenware bodies, and wear consistent with age, whereas reproductions may show modern casting seams or artificial ageing.

These characterful ceramic pieces can be styled as focal points on open shelving, displayed within traditional sideboards, or incorporated into eclectic mantelpiece arrangements to add historical texture, colour, and conversational charm to a room.

Antique ceramics should be cleaned carefully using a dry, soft-bristled brush or a slightly damp microfibre cloth to remove dust. Avoid using harsh chemical detergents, submersing the piece in water for extended periods, or placing them in direct sunlight to protect the aged glaze and hand-painted pigments.
