Antique wooden Madonna sculptures have been created for centuries across Europe as central figures for private devotion, altars, and churches, often reflecting the specific artistic styles of their period.

Traditional figures were typically carved from native hardwoods such as oak, limewood, or pine, then frequently finished with gesso and polychrome paint or gilding.

Authenticity is determined by evaluating tool marks, the natural ageing and oxidisation of the wood, craquelure in any polychrome layers, and traditional joinery or construction methods appropriate to the era.

Such pieces provide a strong focal point when displayed singly on a mantelpiece, within a bookshelf, or mounted on a neutral wall to highlight their texture and historical depth.

Preservation requires maintaining stable temperature and humidity levels, keeping the piece out of direct sunlight to prevent paint fading, and dusting gently with a dry, soft brush without using liquid cleaners.
