Eighteenth-century Dutch maritime paintings typically focus on coastal and harbour views, featuring realistic lighting, atmospheric skies, and detailed depictions of shipping vessels and everyday maritime life.

Artworks from this period were predominantly executed in oil paint applied to hand-stretched linen canvases, housed within hand-carved and gilded wooden frames.

Authentication involves examining the canvas weave, craquelure patterns in the oil paint, stretcher frame construction, and pigments consistent with the period, often assessed using ultraviolet light or microscopic analysis.

An antique maritime painting provides a strong historical focal point and can be balanced in a contemporary space by pairing it with minimalist furnishings, neutral wall colours, and subtle modern lighting.

Preservation requires maintaining stable temperature and humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight, keeping the canvas away from heat sources, and having professional cleaning or restoration performed by a qualified conservator.
