1940 - 1960
Sold 13 November 2025 · The Vintage Wrist Watch Company

Description

Gents Omega Seamaster 2990 (Ranchero) watch.

(Due to insurance restrictions, this item is for purchase within the UK only.)

The watch has a calibre 268 17-jewel hand-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is fully signed and it has the serial number 17,496,547 which dates it back to 1960.

It is very likely that this watch left the Omega factory as a Ranchero but somebody, and often it was a Swedish agent called J P Brandt, had the hands and dial swapped to transform it into a Seamaster. Our understanding for this is that the name Ranchero (which roughly translates as farm boy) was not very appealing to the Swedish public, but the Seamaster name was. Hence, they are known as a 'transformed Ranchero'.

The watch measures 36mm diameter excluding the Omega winding crown and the lugs so a good wearable size. The case is stainless steel case is in lovely condition, just general light marking to the back but not too serious at all. The inside of the case back is signed with the Omega triangular mark together with the case reference 2990-1 which is correct for the calibre 268. The back of the watch states that the watch is waterproof but, as with any vintage watch, it should be kept away from water and moisture.

The lens is the original Omega lens, with the tiny clear Omega logo to the centre. It is in very nice condition.

The dial is in its original finish with original hands and a subsidiary seconds dial. There is self coloured freckling across the dial.

A later leather strap has been fitted.

The watch will be sent in a new presentation box.

Due to insurance restrictions, this item is for purchase within the UK only.

Introduced in 1948, the Omega Seamaster line was built upon technology developed for the British military during the Second World War, renowned for its robustness and water resistance.

These watches typically feature stainless steel or gold cases, acrylic crystals, and hand-wound or automatic mechanical movements crafted with brass and synthetic ruby jewels.

Authenticity is verified by checking serial numbers on the movement against official manufacturer databases, examining dial typography for correct alignment, and inspecting hallmark stamps inside the case back.

A classic timepiece pairs effortlessly with tailored tailoring, sharp knitwear, and minimalist menswear, serving as a subtle focal point of understated elegance.

Keep the watch away from strong magnetic fields and moisture, store it in a dry environment when not in use, and have it serviced professionally by a certified horologist every three to five years.
