Nineteenth century British watercolour painting was characterized by a focus on naturalism, atmospheric effects, and the depiction of the rural countryside, often capturing the transient qualities of light and weather.

These works were typically created using gum-based water-soluble pigments applied to heavy, handmade rag paper or card, and were often mounted behind glass within wooden or gilded frames.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the paper for age-related toning and watermarks, checking for genuine pigment absorption rather than modern dot-matrix printing, and looking for period framing methods and signatures.

An antique watercolour brings historic depth to a room and can be hung on a neutral wall or paired with classic wooden furniture to create a sophisticated, layered interior aesthetic.

Antique watercolours should be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading and paper degradation, and displayed in climate-controlled environments away from excess moisture to protect the delicate medium.
