FAQs

Nineteenth century walnut furniture frequently incorporated rich wood veneers, decorative crossbanding, and substantial brass hardware, reflecting both revivalist tendencies and high levels of cabinet-making craftsmanship.

These pieces typically utilised solid timber carcasses faced with highly figured walnut veneer, incorporating hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer constructions and fitted brass swing handles with key escutcheons.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the timber ageing, hand-cut joinery inside the drawers, consistency of wear patterns around the handles, and the nature of the secondary woods used in the carcass construction.

This type of foundational furniture serves as an anchor in a bedroom or hallway, pairing effectively with minimalist modern decor to highlight the warmth and grain texture of the antique wood.

Maintenance requires keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer cracking, and applying microcrystalline wax periodically to nourish and protect the polished wooden surface.
