FAQs

Nineteenth-century maritime paintings typically focus on coastal scenes, sailing vessels, and atmospheric weather effects, often executed with textured brushwork to capture movement on water.

These works were traditionally created using oil-based pigments applied to stretched canvas or wooden panels, framed in giltwood or gesso moulded timber frames.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the canvas weave, stretcher bar construction, pigment composition, and natural ageing characteristics such as craquelure and varnish oxidation.

Pairing a historic artwork with contemporary furnishings creates a striking contrast that adds depth, character, and a sense of history to a room.

Preservation requires keeping the artwork away from direct sunlight, maintaining stable humidity and temperature levels, and dusting gently with a soft, dry brush.
