The Meiji period spans from 1868 to 1912, marking an era of modernisation where Japanese metalworkers and artists produced exceptional export wares, particularly refined bronze sculptures that gained international acclaim.

Master metalworkers typically utilised the lost-wax casting technique (cire perdue), followed by meticulous hand-chasing, patination, and sometimes inlay work to achieve fine textural details.

Authentic pieces often feature finely articulated hand-chiselled fur, subtle multi-toned chemical patinas, heavy solid construction, and occasionally artist signatures or foundry marks on the underside.

Placing a sculptural metal piece on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or dedicated pedestal allows it to serve as a focal point, contrasting effectively against minimalist architectural backdrops.

Maintain antique bronze by dusting gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and occasionally applying a very light coat of microcrystalline wax to protect the historic patina from moisture and handling.
