Originating during the Italian Renaissance, the credenza was initially designed as a low cabinet used in noble households for serving meals and displaying tableware. Over the centuries, it evolved into a central piece of storage furniture characterised by architectural mouldings and relief carving.

Italian sideboards were predominantly constructed from solid walnut, favoured for its tight grain and durability. Craftspeople utilised hand-cut dovetail joinery, mortise and tenon joints, and secondary woods such as poplar or pine for interior structural elements.

Authentic period pieces display signs of hand-tooling, such as hand-planed rear panels, irregular dovetails, and peg joinery. The timber will also show natural oxidisation inside drawers and drawers often feature original hand-forged iron or brass hardware.
