A fine example of a pewter "ships" inkwell, this form is known as a "capstan"....made for more stability as the ship crosses rough seas....it has a wide broad flat base and a cylindrical main body that is tapered from top to bottom with six quill holes in the top....it would have had a ceramic /glass liner which is missing, but otherwise in very good condition.

A ships inkwell is a specialized, weighted inkpot designed with a broad base to prevent spillage on moving vessels during the Georgian era.

Traditional inkwells from the 18th century were frequently cast from pewter, brass, or bronze, often featuring lead weights in the base for stability.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit historical touchmarks, hand-beaten or turned construction marks, authentic surface oxidation, and period-appropriate wear.

Place the inkwell on a leather-topped desk or wooden surface as a standalone historical accent piece to add character and industrial depth.

Preserve antique pewter by keeping it in a stable humidity environment, dusting gently with a soft cloth, and avoiding aggressive chemical polishes that remove patination.
