Huge Japanese Cloisonne Enamel Temple Water Dispenser - Dragon. Circa 1880.
Incredibly rare Temple Water Dispenser unusually rendered with Japanese cloisonne enamel (normally in plain bronze or copper finish). Decorated in deep green, blue, red and pink enamels with two ferocious-looking dragons contesting the sacred pearl of wisdom among stylised clouds and water. Panels of blossoms and grasses over brocade pattern ground completing the battlescene (unsigned). Superb.
Condition: Excellent condition with minor enamel losses, and retaining spherical shape without dents. An early and rare Japanese cloisonne piece of the highest craftsmanship for the era. Museum quality. High quality display stand included (circa 1880, with finely carved Dragon decoration).
