Sideboards evolved significantly during the 18th and 19th centuries from simple serving tables into enclosed cabinetry designed for dining room storage and display.

Traditional sideboards are typically constructed using solid hardwoods like oak, mahogany, or walnut, featuring mortise and tenon joinery, hand-cut dovetails, and intricate veneer or inlay work.

Authenticity is determined by examining construction marks, hand-carved details, timber oxidisation, historical hardware, and consistency in tool marks that indicate period handcrafting.

Pairing a period wooden sideboard with contemporary art, minimalist lighting, or neutral walls creates a balanced interior that highlights the historical craftsmanship.

Maintain antique wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and treat it periodically with natural beeswax to nourish the finish without sealing the pores.
