An 18th-century French commode is a low chest of drawers, typically featuring refined proportions, high-quality timber veneers, and often a marble top, evolving from heavy baroque styles to lighter neoclassical designs.

These pieces are typically constructed using solid hardwoods such as oak or pine for the internal carcase, faced with fine veneers like mahogany, and often incorporate hand-cut dovetail joints, cast brass mounts, and imported marble slabs.

Authenticity is identified through hand-cut joinery, old tool marks, appropriate timber shrinkage, hand-forged or cast hardware consistent with the period, and the natural oxidisation of the wood over centuries.

Pairing a historical commode with contemporary art or minimalist lighting creates a balanced juxtaposition that highlights the craftsmanship of the antique while keeping the space feeling fresh and lived-in.

Maintain the wood by applying microcrystalline wax sparingly and avoiding direct sunlight or central heating vents. For marble tops, clean immediately with pH-neutral solutions to prevent staining from acidic substances.
