A banjo barometer is a type of weather glass characterised by its elongated shape resembling a banjo, featuring an upper thermometer section and a lower circular dial for measuring atmospheric pressure, popularised during the Georgian and Edwardian periods.

These instruments were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or rosewood, frequently enhanced with boxwood or satinwood stringing and marquetry inlay, housing brass bezels and glass dials.

Authentic pieces generally display period-appropriate hand-carved or inlaid details, traditional mercury or early aneroid movements, hand-written or engraved dial faces, and aged patina on the timber and brass components consistent with early 20th-century craftsmanship.

Position the barometer as a focal point on a neutral wall or within a traditional hallway, study, or living room to add historical depth, pairing it alongside framed prints or architectural elements.

Maintain the item away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity fluctuations to protect the wood and internal mechanism, occasionally cleaning the timber with a dry microfibre cloth and sparing application of specialist wax.
