Joseph Chamberlain 1836-1914 , was one of the most important British politicians of his day despite never being prime minister. Winston Churchill said of him that he '' made the political weather.''
A very successful businessman with non-conformist roots, he then turned his conside
...rable energies to local politics, making many positive reforms in the city of Birmingham. The municipalization of local utilities, forcing slum clearance and improving city housing, expanding free education for children of the city and founding the free art gallery and museum there. These pioneering changes vaulted him to national political prominence.
He was an ardent Imperialist and constructive radical who cared more for pragmatism and successful results than ideology.
Joseph Chamberlain split both major British political parties in the course of his career. First a radical liberal, then a Liberal unionist (after opposing home rule in Ireland), then a leading Imperialist in a conservative coalition.
His youngest son Neville Chamberlain did become prime minister.
