Meiji period metalwork refers to decorative and sculptural items produced in Japan between 1868 and 1912, a time when Japanese metal artisans gained international renown for their advanced casting, hammering, and patination techniques.

These pieces are typically created using traditional lost-wax casting methods in iron or bronze, followed by meticulous hand-chiselling to define individual scales and fins, and chemical treatments to achieve rich patination.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit fine, hand-tooled detailing, naturalistic proportions, consistent weight, and aged patination showing subtle wear, sometimes accompanied by artist signatures or foundry seals.

These sculptural objects serve as striking focal points on sideboards, mantels, or display cabinets, bringing texture and historical depth to minimal or eclectic interior schemes.

Preserve these items by keeping them away from moisture and direct sunlight, dusting gently with a soft, dry cloth, and avoiding chemical cleaners that can damage the historical patina.
