Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Vienna cold-painted bronze inkstand is a functional desktop set produced primarily in Austria during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. These objects combine cast bronze figures and ink receptacles with hand-applied unfired paint layers, often portraying Orientalist scenes, wildlife, or genre subjects on a stone or marble base.

These items were cast in bronze using lost-wax or sand-casting techniques and finished with multiple layers of oil-based paints applied after casting without kiln firing. The finished sculptures were frequently mounted on marble, alabaster, or onyx plinths, and sometimes integrated secondary elements such as glass or metal ink liners.

Authentic pieces from the Franz Xaver Bergmann foundry often bear a stamped foundry mark featuring the letter B within a vase-shaped urn, along with Geschutzt (protected/patented) or numerical shape marks. Additional indicators include finely detailed chasing, original polychrome paint displaying natural age wear, and substantial visual weight.

An antique inkstand serves as an architectural accent piece on an executive desk, library console, or sideboard. Pairing the bronze sculpture with dark wood, leather desk blotters, or contemporary streamlined shelving highlights the detailed metalwork through stylistic contrast.

Cold-painted bronze surfaces require gentle dusting with a soft, dry camel-hair brush to avoid removing the delicate unfired paint. Solvents, water, chemical polish, and abrasive liquids must be avoided completely, while placement away from direct sunlight prevents heat damage and paint flaking.
