ANTIQUE #SA1137836

Unusual Napoleonic Sepia Watercolour

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Quiet Street Antiques of Bath

An unusual original sepia WATERCOLOUR/DRAWING which depicts two French Napoleonic soldiers playing a rather strange game of cards, presumably during a break in the fighting, whilst overlooked by a third. Quite what the game is, we do not know ~ one soldier has a clothes peg on his nose! ~ but the details drawn of the uniforms and weapons are highly accurate. On the reverse is a label which states this is by the French artist Emile Jean Horace VERNET (“Horace Vernet”) born in 1789, who came into prominence during the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte. About 8ins x 11ins including the modern (and rather disappointing) frame!
