Description

This is a particularly nice set of 19th century Anglo-Indian campaign drawers. This set is made from solid teak which has taken on a beautiful patina over the years and has the nicest handle design I have seen on this style of drawers. The handles also sit flush in the body of the drawers making for a very tidy design. The chest as per its nature splits in two as originally this would have been moved from location to location on the back of a mule or other animal. This set is made up of entirely drawers making it very practical and offering plenty of storage.

Anglo-Indian campaign chests were portable storage units made in the 19th century for British military officers and colonial administrators travelling across the British Empire, typically constructed in two or more stackable sections for ease of transport.

Authentic campaign furniture frequently utilised dense, durable tropical hardwoods such as teak, mahogany, or camphor wood, paired with protective brass corners, strapwork, and recessed drop handles to withstand rigorous travel.

Authentic pieces feature structural elements such as split-carcass construction held together by brass straps, recessed hardware that sits flush against the wood to prevent snagging, and hand-cut dovetail joints on the interior drawers.

A campaign chest functions exceptionally well as a statement storage piece in a bedroom, living room, or study, where its clean architectural lines and metallic brass accents provide a sophisticated contrast to contemporary furnishings.

Maintain teak furniture by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and periodically nourishing the timber with natural beeswax or specialised furniture polish, avoiding direct sunlight and excessive moisture to protect the finish.
