This nineteenth-century Victorian oil on canvas painting by Alfred Pollentine depicts a Venetian cityscape of the Grand Canal featuring gondolas and architectural landmarks, created around 1870. The artwork is housed within an original glazed gilt gallery frame made of gilded wood with deep, ornate scroll carvings on the outer border and smooth black-painted inner mouldings. The composition shows water, boats, buildings, and the signature in the lower right corner, captured in a multi-toned palette of gold, black, brown, and pale blue. The canvas measures 50 cm high, 45 cm wide, and 405 cm deep. In a modern interior, this piece brings classic character to living rooms, studies, or hallways when hung on a wall above a sideboard. The framed painting complements traditional English country house interior schemes and provides a focal point within domestic spaces.

FAQs

During the 19th century, British artists frequently visited Venice to capture its unique light, historical architecture, and canals. These landscapes typically depict iconic structures like the Doges Palace and St Marks Campanile alongside traditional gondolas.

Artists employed oil pigments suspended in drying oils, applied directly onto woven linen or cotton canvas stretched over wooden frames. Paintings were routinely housed in ornate, carved timber frames coated with composition ornamentation and gold leaf.

Authentic works often display age-appropriate craquelure across the paint surface, natural timber ageing on the stretcher bars, and historic artist signatures. Inspection under ultraviolet light can also reveal period-correct varnish and pigments.

A framed landscape functions effectively as a focal point above a mantelpiece, sideboard, or within a gallery wall. Pairing traditional gilded frames with minimalist modern furniture creates a compelling visual contrast.

Keep the painting away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and heat sources to prevent cracking or warping. Dust gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding water or chemical cleaning solvents.
