Designed by French sculptor Antonin Mercie following the Franco-Prussian War, Gloria Victis translates to Glory to the Vanquished and represents an allegory of sacrifice and heroism. Cast extensively by the Ferdinand Barbedienne foundry in the late 19th century, it became a recognised masterpiece of French academic art.

Statues from this era were created using lost-wax or sand-casting techniques with bronze alloys. The finished metal was treated with chemical patination to produce dark tones, occasionally detailed with gilding, and mounted onto carved marble pedestals.
