Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the Victorian era, ebonised furniture and decorative arts became highly popular as craftsmen sought to replicate expensive imported ebony using stained native hardwoods. These figurative sculptures often drew inspiration from classical antiquities, Grand Tour souvenirs, and Venetian decorative traditions.

Craftsmen typically used dense, fine-grained hardwoods such as fruitwood, beech, or lime wood. The wood was carved by hand and subjected to chemical staining, iron-based dyes, or dark lacquers to achieve a deep black, ebonised finish.

Authentic period pieces show evidence of hand-carving tool marks, subtle variations between paired figures, and natural wear to the ebonised finish where underlying wood shows through. Additionally, older timber may exhibit natural shrinkage lines or checking along the grain.

Ebonised figures add strong visual weight and architectural contrast to modern rooms. They are frequently placed as a pair on top of a console table, sideboard, or mantelpiece to create symmetrical balance against neutral backdrops.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth. Avoid water, harsh chemical detergents, and placement in direct sunlight or near heat radiators, which can cause timber to split or the ebonised finish to break down; apply a specialised dark beeswax sparingly if nourishment is required.
