An Antique French Sofa - With Raspberry Pink Velvet Upholstery.

19th century
For Sale by Culvertons (Reserved for a buyer)
Description

This attractive French sofa is in remarkably good condition. If not original to the date of manufacture (1890 - 1910), its sumptuous raspberry pink velvet cover and intricate bullion fringe and tassels, have certainly been in place for many generations. Fabrics generally do not stand the test of time, but in this case, the small amount of wear this sofa has received, has created an appealing three-dimensional look to its velvet covering. It is the perfect choice for decorators, looking to bring warmth and interest into an interior. If you lift the fringe at the front, you will find a pair of pretty French cabriole legs, supported by two original castors with wooden wheels, both of which are in very good condition. The back of the sofa is supported by two swept legs (please see images) . All of its supports have been traditionally enhanced with French polish and wax. When we discovered this delightful sofa, the webbing that tensions the springs needed replacing, which our upholsterer has undertaken. He also, and very neatly, recovered the whole underside of the sofa with hessian using traditional upholstery tacks. Whilst considering the upholstery work that was needed, he remarked on the incredible preserved state of the springs and the exemplary condition of the sofa as a whole - apologies, if you can see gaps in the fringe in the photographs, it is because the cords are not hanging correctly rather than missing. We have also cleaned the velvet covering by hand, using environmentally friendly materials. This decorative, comfortable and very supportive period sofa is now ready, once again, to be used and enjoyed.

Dealers Notes

Whenever possible Culvertons undertake the carriage of items within London and the home counties. Professional, competitive and trusted couriers and shipping companies are engaged for deliveries for the remainder of our customers. Smaller items, when instructed, will be carefully parcelled and securely sent by the carrier.

We strive to accurately describe and illustrate our stock on the 'Selling Antiques' website. However, we understand that it is not always possible to judge from photographs how an item will look in the home or garden. For this reason, if notified within seven days from the date of delivery we offer a full refund (less any agreed carriage costs) once the item has been returned in the same condition as it left our premises.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

19th-century French sofas, particularly from the Napoleon III period, are defined by fully upholstered frames, deep cushioning, curved silhouettes, and luxurious velvet or damask covers. They frequently feature elaborate passementerie, including deep fringe skirts and tassel details, designed for formal salons and boudoirs.

These sofas were constructed using solid beechwood or oak internal frames, stuffed with natural horsehair and jute webbing over hand-tied steel coil springs. The outer covers utilised high-grade cotton or silk velvet, trimmed with woven passementerie tassels and fringe.

Authentic period pieces exhibit traditional hand-stitched upholstery techniques, original brass or iron castors concealed under the frame, and multi-layered spring-and-webbing construction beneath the seat. Examining the underside for hand-tacked textiles and period frame joinery helps confirm age.

A vibrant velvet settee serves as an impactful focal point when placed against neutral or dark saturated walls in a living space or entryway. Combining traditional passementerie details with modern art, clean-lined side tables, or contemporary lighting creates a balanced scheme.

Gently vacuum the velvet pile using a soft brush attachment, moving strictly in the direction of the weave to avoid crushing the fibers. Keep the item away from direct sunlight to prevent colour fading, and engage a specialist conservator for professional cleaning of fringe trim.
