Culvertons has dated this French Pink Velvet Sofa to the 1890s.
Fabrics generally do not stand the test of time, but in this case, the small amount of wear this sofa has received, has created an appealing three-dimensional look to its velvet covering. It is the perfect choice for decorators, looking to bring warmth and interest into an interior. If you lift the fringe at the front, you will find a pair of pretty French cabriole legs, supported by two original castors with wooden wheels, both of which are in very good condition. The back of the sofa is supported by two swept legs (please see images) . All of its supports have been traditionally enhanced with French polish and wax. When we discovered this delightful sofa, the webbing that tensions the springs needed replacing, which our upholsterer has undertaken. He also, and very neatly, recovered the whole underside of the sofa with hessian using traditional upholstery tacks. Whilst considering the upholstery work that was needed, he remarked on the incredible preserved state of the springs and the exemplary condition of the sofa as a whole - apologies, if you can see gaps in the fringe in the photographs, it is because the cords are not hanging correctly rather than missing. We have also cleaned the velvet covering by hand, using environmentally friendly materials. This decorative, comfortable and very supportive period sofa is now ready, once again, to be used and enjoyed.
