FAQs

The 19th-century British watercolour movement is characterised by transparent washes, attention to atmospheric light, and detailed depictions of topography, architecture, and rural or urban landscapes.

Artists of this era typically used finely ground pigments suspended in water-soluble binders, applied to rag-based watercolour paper or card using sable or hog-hair brushes.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the paper watermark, the chemical composition of the pigments, the ageing of the paper support, and verifying artist signatures or inscriptions against known records.

A period watercolour works well when framed with conservation-grade glass and neutral mounts, hung alongside modern minimalist pieces to create a balanced, layered gallery wall.

Works on paper should be kept away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent fading and foxing, using acid-free mounting materials and UV-protective glazing.
