The sideboard evolved into a distinct dining room form during the late 18th century, largely popularized by cabinet makers such as Thomas Sheraton and Hepplewhite, who designed pieces specifically for serving food and displaying silver.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid mahogany or pinewood frames with figured mahogany veneers, often accented with hand-cut stringing, dovetail joints, and cast brass hardware.

Authentic items feature period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, secondary timbers like oak or pine inside drawers, original or period-correct brass fittings, and signs of age-appropriate oxidisation and wear.

This piece can be integrated into contemporary spaces by pairing it with minimalist lighting, abstract art above, or neutral walls to create a striking contrast between historical craftsmanship and modern design.

Maintain the wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying traditional beeswax to nourish the timber without stripping the finish.
