This is an Austrian Victorian bronzed plaster statue, dating to circa 1900, depicting a standing female milkmaid in rustic attire. The piece displays warm brown hues throughout its bronzed plaster surface, complemented by a milk jug beside her and an inquisitive lamb at her feet, all resting upon a dark octagonal plinth. The woman wears a bonnet over her hair and a detailed costume with button fastenings on the bodice. The sculpture measures 57.5 cm high, 24 cm wide, and 21 cm deep. Suitable for placement on a sideboard top, this substantial figural sculpture brings decorative character to a traditional living space or study. The aged patina and detailed drapery of the skirt add visual interest to the composition, while the dark plinth anchors the standing figure securely. It is positioned easily in various domestic settings as a standalone decorative object.

FAQs

During the late Victorian era and the turn of the century, bronzed plaster statues became popular across Europe, particularly in Austria, as an accessible alternative to solid bronze works. Craftspeople cast plaster figurines and coated them with metallic bronzing finishes or cold-painted patinas to mimic heavy cast metal for interior display.

These sculptures were made using plaster of Paris cast in moulds, often reinforced internally with wire or tow fibres. Once dried, the surfaces were painted, gilded, or chemically treated with bronzing powders and lacquers to replicate metallic patination and depth.

Authentic late 19th and early 20th-century plaster pieces often feature impressed maker marks, foundry stamps, or mould numbers near the base. They display natural surface wear, faint seam lines from original moulds, and small chips that reveal white or terracotta plaster underneath the bronzed finish.

Position the figure on a sideboard, console table, or mantelpiece where ambient light highlights the sculpted details. Pairing warm metallic tones with dark wood furniture, stone surfaces, or neutral backgrounds creates a balanced, refined focal point.

Dust the figure gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a fine camel-hair brush to prevent scratching the delicate surface finish. Avoid using liquid cleaners, furniture wax, or damp cloths, as moisture can dissolve plaster or strip the underlying patination.
