Description

An oil on canvas from the Dutch golden age portraying mackerel a pewter jug and knife. Holland in the seventeenth century ascended to great wealth and power ,this created a phenomenon of artists providing works for the walls of a wealthy middle class, a luxury that in the rest of Europe was only for the top level of society. This has left a remarkable insight into the tastes and aspirations of the residents of the towns and cities of Holland. As well as family portraits, still life paintings were extremely popular. Fine foods and tableware was a display of good taste and both are present in this emotive painting, there is a skilful sense of composition, light and detail. The painting has been relined at some point and there are a couple of small areas of restoration that are of a professional quality. The frame is a twentieth century copy of a seventeenth century style.
